Saldus –
a "Drop of Honey" in Courland

Saldus is a town located halfway between Riga and Liepāja. As one approaches the town from either side, one can see that it is nestled in a cozy valley. It is hard to say why this is so, perhaps so that the harsh winds race over it or perhaps so that it honey does not trickle away.

Saldus has its own lake, river and beautiful park to be proud of, yet its great value is the enterprising and energetic inhabitants. We live in a significant place, the center, because Saldus is equidistant from Latvia's major ports,  approximately 100 kilometers from Liepāja, Ventspils and Riga. Our entrepreneurs are especially glad of the beneficial location of our town and perhaps that is why so many varied sectors of business have developed successfully in Saldus.

We are friendly and gladly welcome visitors from Liepāja as well as abroad. Our smallest guests are welcome in the very center of town to the playground built in 2005 where one can hear the laughter of children in every season and make a new friends.

Saint John's Lutheran Church, one of the oldest buildings in town, in the center of Saldus, which is often portrayed in the paintings of Saldus most famous citizen painter Janis Rozentāls, awaits you. The ambassadors of Spain and Austria were most attracted to this church and Rozentāls painting. It is quite possible that many art enthusiasts are familiar with Saldus thanks to the work of our famous son. The inhabitants of Saldus themselves were are also proud of their famous citizen when they prepared for the 140th anniversary of Rozentāls birth to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the founding of the town.

Saldus has many interesting and beautiful places to visit, holidays to celebrate, delicacies to try and smiling inhabitants with whom to become acquainted.

Welcome to our beautiful town!

— The Chairperson of Saldus Municipality Council
