Old Brick Arch Bridge – Across the Venta River –
Lat: N56.9699724, Lon: E021.9775192
Baznīcas iela 36,
The bridge was built in 1873-1874 and is one of the longest brick bridges in Europe. It was built according to czarist bridge plans 164 meters “500 feet” across and 8 meters “25 feet” wide, wide enough for two carriages to pass. The bridge has been the backdrop for many Latvian films. The supports are formed by fieldstone but the span id from brick. During World War I in 1915, the retreating Russian Army blew up two sections of the bridge. The bridge was restored with reinforced concrete in 1926 but in 1958, the cobblestones were covered with asphalt. The European Union supplied financial support in 2007 to restore the ancient arches.
